The first lighthouse
on St Catherine's Down was built in the early 14th
Century. Trinity house started to build a tower nearby in
1785, but it was never completed due to problems caused
by fog. The present lighthouse was first lit in 1840. The elegant 120ft tower was affected by fog and so was reduced to the present height of 86ft in 1875. |
